Updated: Sep 2, 2022

Considering Holy Closure | led by Rev. Julie Kelly and Rev. Manda Truchinski

Monday, September 26th from 6:00-7:30pm

Holy Closure is the season when a congregation closes its doors. Have you or your congregation wondered about this lately? You're certainly not alone. As the Church we confess that resurrection requires death and yet we are more comfortable talking about beginnings than endings. Beginnings and endings are both part of what it means to be the Body of Christ. We invite you to enter the conversation around Holy Closure; "Is it time?" "How do we begin?" "What happens when...?"

This conversation is for lay people who love their church, leaders who are tired and still trying, clergy who are interested and inexperienced, and anyone who is willing to explore endings that make space for resurrection. This conversation will be led by Pastor Julie Kelly who has experienced Holy Closure in a congregation that she served. They will be joined by Pastor Manda who can speak to the process and options of Holy Closure for congregations.

Portico Annual Enrollment: for Portico Members | led by Andrea Arey

It’s budget planning season for the upcoming year! In every congregation, pastor salaries are a significant portion of expenses. This workshop is for congregation leaders, such as officers, council members, and finance volunteers/staff, who work with budgets and payroll. It is also for clergy who have compensation questions. We will walk through the 2022 SPS Compensation Guidelines and answer any questions you might have.

Between Called Pastor: What to Expect During the Interim Time | led by Rev. Cindy Beck

Tuesday, October 4th from 6:30-7:30pm

Your pastor has announced they are leaving. The Office of the Bishop provided names for an Interim Pastor to guide the congregation through the transition. The interim is not “down” time. It is a time of serious discernment for the congregation. The Interim Pastor walks the congregation through a time of exploration on how God is calling your congregation to serve in this time and place. This workshop helps you understand what to expect during the Interim Time.

The Salvadoran Lutheran Church & Sierra Pacific Synod | led by Rev. Christian Chavarría

Wednesday, October 12th from 4:00-5:00pm

Join the Rev. Christian Chavarría of the Salvadoran Lutheran Church for a conversation around our synod’s partnership. The Salvadoran Lutheran Church is one of our international sister synods and we’ve been grateful to be in deep relationship with them over the years. In this workshop, Rev. Christian will share an overview of the Salvadoran Lutheran Church and the work he does as Assistant to the Bishop, he’ll share more about our synod and congregation’s partnerships, and how you too can be in further relationship and community with the Salvadoran Lutheran Church and people.

Who’s My Neighbor? Homelessness in California| led by Jerry Metzker and Carol Roberts of LSS Nor Cal

Tuesday, October 18th from 6:30-7:30pm

Carol Roberts, CEO, and Jerry Metzker, Development Director, of Lutheran Social Services of Northern California, will provide basic information about the history, causes and experiences of homelessness in Northern California. We will talk about: What is homelessness? Who is experiencing homelessness? How does this happen? How do people exit homelessness? We also invite our workshop participants to share their experiences of homelessness, launching a conversation about what the Sierra Pacific Synod and its member churches can do to end homelessness in our region...for good.
