2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly Recap

As of this morning, the 2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly officially concluded! Voting Delegates from the Sierra Pacific Synod are beginning their travels back to the West Coast after a spirit-filled week in Columbus, Ohio.

Here is an overview of items the Assembly voted on and highlights from their time together:

  • The Assembly worshipped as a community together daily, with each service led by diverse voices and welcoming participation from across our vast church body. The opening service welcomed all Synod Bishops and Vice Presidents to process in together, whereas Wednesday's Service centered Native voices as we marked the Repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery, and Friday's service concluded with the Installation of newly elected Vice President of the ELCA.

  • The Assembly honored and recognized a multitude of servants and guests who are a part of the ELCA or in deep relationship with the ELCA. This included the late Bill Horne, former Vice President of the ELCA who passed away last year, Bishops and Church Council members who have concluded their service, inter-religious representatives from our full communion partners, and many more.

  • The Assembly voted to pass the following Memorials: B4: Restructure of the Governance of the ELCA, C3: Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust Revision, A5: Fortifying Ministries in Underserved Urban Areas, A7: Black Migrant Strategy, B9: Mission Development Process, A6: Advance Salary Equity, A8: Land Back, B8: Separation Agreements, A14: Regarding Roe v. Wade Change and Pastoral Counseling, B11: Specialized Ministries and On Leave from Call Status, A4: Greenhouse Gas Reduction, and B5: DEIA ELCA Governance Audit. The full Report of the Memorial Committee can be read here.

  • On the 5th Ballot, the Assembly elected Imran Siddiqui of the Southeastern Synod as the new Vice President of the ELCA.

  • Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton offered a public apology to Iglesia Luterana Santa María Peregrina and a public commitment to be an anti-racist church.

  • We heard the Report of the Treasurer, Report of the Vice President, Report of the Secretary, and Report of the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA - which can be read here.

  • At the conclusion of the Assembly, the 2025 Churchwide Assembly location was announced - Phoenix, AZ!
