Day of Service

Reach out to Catherine Slabaugh at (650) 302-0364 or catherine@spselca.org with any questions.
On Wednesday, June 1st we will begin our Synod Assembly weekend together with a Day of Service! All 4 Reno/Sparks Lutheran congregations in our Synod are helping host the service projects as we serve the local community. People who are attending Synod Assembly as a Voting Member, Guest, or Mission Partner are invited to arrive a day early to participate in this Day of Service. Additionally, we invite all who would like to attend to join us for the Day of Service - even if you won't be attending the rest of Synod Assembly!

Registration for the Day of Service opens on March 1, 2022 and closes May 1, 2022. Registration can be found on our general assembly registration form, found here. A recommended donation of $50 is being asked for participants of the Day of Service. This helps cover food for the day and fun service day t-shirts! All additional funds collected will directly benefit the ministry of the Sierra Pacific Synod and no one will be turned away for a lack of funds.

Here are the 4 service projects that will be offered for the Day of Service:
Creative Ministries with the Unhoused
Hosted by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Reno
In this service opportunity, you're invited to hit the road with us as we tour different agencies and their facilities which serve those who are unhoused or in other direct need. Local residents may discover a place which they’d like to continue to support with volunteer time or dollars and guests to the area may find ideas they can take back to their community. Agencies the group will visit include: Good Shepherd’s Clothes Closet, Catholic Charities and Volunteers of America.

We will also be inviting folk to bring donations of personal care and hygiene items to take as donations to the nonprofits we visit.
Quilting, Knitting and Crocheting for a Cause
Hosted by Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Reno
Join us for a day of quilting, knitting, or crocheting. Sewers will be tying and finishing up quilts for Lutheran World Relief and other local Reno charities. Those who knit or crochet are invited to come and work on projects for the Reno community. If knitters or crocheters can bring their own needles and tools, that is helpful. Yarn will be supplied. All abilities are welcome. Projects are expected to be done indoors. Holy Cross is wheelchair accessible and restrooms for all are on site. Participants can spend either all day or part of the day in fellowship and service.
Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful Building Day
Hosted by Faith Lutheran Church, Reno
Join Pr. Shaun O'Reilly for a day with the KTMB organization building compost bins and garden boxes. This project will take place outdoors and be a very hands-on project. No experience is needed - but if you own a tool belt, you are more than welcome to bring it!
Food Bank of Northern Nevada Distribution
Hosted by Lord of Mercy Lutheran Church, Sparks
Join us for an afternoon volunteering with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. This will be an indoor project and will include sorting and distributing food to those in need. This will be an afternoon project, so you are welcome to sign up for another project to participate with in the morning.
